The Spots

Bucharest's café and bar scene doesn't split neatly into "day" and "night" the way you might expect from other cities — a lot of these places blur the line on purpose, pulling espresso shots in the morning and pouring cocktails by 10pm, or doubling as both a dinner spot and a late-night bar depending on when you show up. So rather than force an artificial line between "café" and "bar," here they all are together, the way you'd actually experience them.

For serious coffee, 20grams Coffee Roasters, Dose Specialty Coffee, and Cremma Specialty Café are your best bets — all leaning into the specialty-coffee scene that's quietly taken over Bucharest in the last few years. If you'd rather study surrounded by books, Cărturești Verona is part of Romania's beloved Cărturești bookstore chain, and it's exactly the kind of quiet, browsing-friendly café you want for a slow afternoon with a laptop. Manasia Hub and Random Space lean more "creative hub" than traditional café, with a coworking-adjacent energy that's genuinely useful during exam season.

Looking for something with more personality, Grădina Olari and Sera Eden are garden-style spots — ideal the moment the weather turns warm, when half of Bucharest seems to migrate outdoors, and both work just as well for a lazy afternoon coffee as they do for evening drinks.

When it's time to properly go out, Sippers Bucharest Cocktail Bar, El Dictador, and Ginoteca (yes, an entire bar dedicated to gin) are the ones to know for cocktails done properly. If you want a night that starts with dinner and ends on the dance floor, BAZAAR — self-described as a place to "eat, sip, dance and fall in love" — pretty much does exactly what it says. For something distinctly Romanian, Ciorbărie builds its whole concept around ciorbă, Romania's beloved sour soup, reimagined as a fun bar-and-food experience rather than just a lunch stop (it doubles as a genuinely good place to eat, too — see our Romanian food guide). And Green Tea is something of a Bucharest institution — a theatrical, tea-house-styled lounge bar that's been part of the Universitate nightlife scene for years. Want to actually dance? Why These Three Neighborhoods

It's not a coincidence that all of these cluster around the Armenian Quarter, Universitate, and Piața Romană. These are the same areas that make sense to live in as an Erasmus student — central, walkable, and close to campus — so naturally, they're also where the best café and nightlife scene has grown up around student life. You're rarely more than a 10-minute walk from your next stop on this list.

Right in the Middle of All of It

Most of these spots — especially the Armenian Quarter cluster — sit within a few minutes of ErasmusPass's apartments. It's not an accident: we place students in this part of the city precisely because this is where Bucharest's café and nightlife scene actually lives.
